First let me say that I am an OBX gal at heart. I grew up visiting the Outer Banks as a child and can remember riding on the beach with my family long before beach drving permits were ever even a thought. OBX has my heart. However, in my adult life, another coastal town found its own place in my heart-- a little town called Beaufort on North Carolina's "other beach". Other beach being the Crystal Coast. Side note: Beaufort here is pronounced BOW-fert, just FYI. While it's not my Outer Banks, this charming town has so much to offer, and keeps tugging me back. Here's an example of how we spent a few afternoon hours in the lovely town of Beaufort.
On a random May, Thursday afternoon we set off for Beaufort. Well, the Thursday was not exactly random, it happened to be our wedding anniversary. Our camper was still in the shop for warranty repairs, so our camping trip was on hold until further notice. We are lucky enough to live in eastern NC so are within driving distance to a number of wonderful places to spend an afternoon. We decided on Beaufort, loaded up the bikes, and headed out.
About an hour and a half later we arrive in Beaufort on a gorgeous, sunny afternoon.
After a few minor bike repairs we are off and pedaling. The streets are very bicycle friendly making it the perfect way to explore the cute town. Here are a few suggestions if you happen to head that way yourself, which I highly recommend.
Park on Front Street and either bike or walk. There's no need to drive around , park and enjoy all the town has to offer. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, even a museum so take your time and enjoy.
If you're biking, wander around until you find Blackbeard's Beaufort home. Known as the Hammock House, this home was constructed in 1709 and still stands today. It is a private residence so you can't go inside but you can ride or walk by and snap a few pictures. There is a sign out front so you'll know when you've found it. It's located between Front Street and Ann Street--part of the fun is the seeking! Good luck.
Next- find The Old Burying Ground. This is located on Ann Street and has also been there since the 1700s. A quick google search indicates that there is even an app you can download for a free audio tour. Head to www.beauforthistoricsite.org for more info and a link to the app. Don't skip this stop, its very peaceful and shady and makes a nice place to take a break.
Now you can ride or walk the streets in the Historic District and admire the homes, yards, architecture until you are thirsty. Then, I recommend a stop at Fishtowne Brew House. They serve up their own brews and selection varies but every type we have tried has been a winner. Grab a beer and a seat outside, its the perfect way to end a successful afternoon in Beaufort.
When we have more time, we typically meander in and out of the cute shops, so don't skip out on those if time allows. Also, next time we plan to bring a kayak and a paddleboard. There is the perfect free public launching area right in town.
So, OBX, don't worry, we will be back soon but I think there is room in my heart for 2 best beach towns.
